Physical, Relaxation, and Outdoor

Physical activity has many benefits.

Not only does it make people feel better, it can offer increased strength, flexibility, and stamina, depending on the type of physical activity you do. For an older person, physical activity may become more difficult. That’s why checking in with a doctor before any physical activity is started is always recommended.

Physical activity comes in many forms and preferences.

While some prefer to exercise daily with their own routine, others may enjoy sports, walking, yoga, tai chi, biking, gardening, or swimming.

Many activities can help us to unwind or relax as well. They can be activities we enjoy that can create a diversion from the stresses of everyday life.

Some people prefer to be outdoors where many of the physical and relaxing activities take place.

Helping to keep an older person physically active is important, but preferences in activity for each individual will be different. First, find out what physical activity is enjoyed most, then check with a doctor to see if it is safe to start. Second, the caregiver may need to assist their friend or family member to either sign up for a class, or become their exercise buddy, like going for walks or gardening together. Third, after starting the activity, you may wish to evaluate whether the activity is right for your friend or family member. If it’s not the right physical activity, you may consider something else. The OLDER PERSON, CAREGIVER and the DOCTOR must decide what is right for your older friend or family member to engage in.

Here are some ideas for physical, relaxing, and outdoor activities:
