Community brings us together. Whether it’s going to the store, attending a class, volunteering, or visiting neighbors, we all have a need to be connected.

So too, our older friends and family members may feel a need to be involved in the community. It may be a sense of purpose, such as volunteering, or it could be out of necessity such as doing their own grocery shopping. Being in the community can maintain or improve socialization (visiting with friends), satisfy spiritual interests (going to church), or improve well-being (like taking a class at a senior center). These are just a few of the many benefits.

Helping our loved ones stay connected to the community can be challenging. In this section, we’ll take a look at various opportunities for older persons in the community. We hope you will come away with new ideas in order to make an informed choice for your older friend or family member.
