Books are one of my favorite things. Our older generation grew up with books and newspapers, simple things that were a window to the outside world. Listening was a skill, probably well learned, while others read out loud. Whether a caregiver will be reading a story or providing a book for an older person, stories can feed us.
When thinking about buying, sharing, or checking-out books (from the library) for an older person, consider the following:
- Large print books are so much easier to read! If not large print, use reading glasses if needed.
- Good lighting is a good idea.
- Short stories are better for those with short attention spans.
- Large adult picture books, like nature and travel books, are simple and great fun to look at. Sometimes called, “coffee-table books”, they are wonderful story starters and make great conversations.
- Audio books are ideal for those who love to read but cannot due to poor eyesight or other issues. Audio books are available at bookstores, on-line, and at libraries.
- The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped offers a program of braille and audio materials for free. The materials are available to those who are eligible and meet the criteria. An application must be completed. Visit their website or visit a Talking Book Library in your area.
