Painting birdhouses is fun for young and old alike.

This is a great intergenerational activity, because it’s simple and there’s no right or wrong way to paint one. Just use your imagination when it comes to color choices!

Materials Needed for Painting a Birdhouse:

• Already-made birdhouse (usually available at hobby stores)
• Paint (paint made for outdoor use) (non-toxic)
• Paint brushes (various sizes)
• Painting cups (if needed-I sometimes use old medicine cups or small paper cups to pour small amount of paint into.)
• Old newspaper to place underneath project
• Old paint clothes, paint shirts, or aprons

Instructions:

1. Use old paint clothes or aprons to cover clothes. Place old newspapers down on work surface to cover.
2. Choose your birdhouse and paint colors. Paint one color, multi-colored or whatever design you wish.
3. Let dry.
4. When dry set outdoors to enjoy.

Considerations for Older Adult Crafters:

• Larger handled paint brushes may be easier to grip than thinner ones.
• Consider painting separate birdhouses with a child, or painting one together.
• For those needing close observation, make sure paint is not ingested.
