How to Make a Finger Pot
Finger Pots are tiny pots made from clay.
These small pots are easy to make, but also useful for small items like buttons and clips. But, what I love the most is that you can make a fun pot for tiny succulents.
What you’ll need to make a Finger Pot
- Oven bake clay (comes in many colors)
- Paint and paint brush (optional)
- Cookie sheet lined with foil
- Oven
Directions for making a Finger Pot
- Form the clay into a ball by rolling the clay between both hands. You can choose how much clay to use. I used one small package. Roll the clay until you get a nice round ball with minimal creases.
- Holding the clay in one hand, push one side of the clay in using your thumb to form a hole. Push the clay to the bottom and out to the sides without puncturing the hole. Keep the sides and bottom of the pot to at least a 1/4 of an inch of clay.
- Keep working with the clay, delicately pinching your fingers until you have smoothed out the sides and bottom.
- To make the bottom level, gently tap the pot down on the table a few times. You may do the same to the top of the pot to make it level as well.
- Once you are done and you are happy with the shape, place it on a foil lined cookie sheet and bake. Use the clay manufacturers directions when baking.
- Remove the clay finger pot from the oven and let cool.
- Paint the pot if you wish or leave as is.
- You may plant a succulent in it or use it to hold other small items.
Tips
- The nice thing about working with clay is that if you’re not happy with your design, just roll it back up into a ball and start over again. That is, before you bake it. Once baked it is set.
- The shapes don’t need to be perfectly round. You may wish to make other creative shapes. Use your imagination!
- This is a tactile activity and great for elders who may benefit from sensory stimulation.
